Palm will introduce a Web-based development environment for WebOS applications, called Ares, by the end of this year.

Ares got its first public demonstration on Thursday at the Open Mobile Summit conference in San Francisco. It is designed to make it easy for developers to pull various components together in Javascript to build applications for the Palm Pre and Pixi, the two handsets that run Palm’s WebOS.

The storied mobile-device company is up against tough competition for developers against the Apple iPhone, Google Android, Research In Motion BlackBerry and other mobile platforms. It released the WebOS SDK (software development kit) to a select group in April and to the public in July. The company said the SDK has been downloaded tens of thousands of times.

Ares will give developers another way to write WebOS applications and will allow fast development through a drag-and-drop interface, Palm said. It’s designed to help Web developers make the leap to becoming mobile developers, said Michael Abbott, senior vice president of application software and services at Palm. Ares will be available by year’s end through the WebOS developer site.

It won’t require any downloads or configuration, Abbott said. The environment includes debugging and a mechanism for developers to share libraries and APIs (application programming interfaces), Abbott said.

In a demonstration at the conference, a Palm engineer created a search application for the Flickr Web photo site. Using a simulation of the WebOS phone interface, he dragged logos, a search field and button, a list widget and other components onto successive screens of the application. To link the new application to Flickr, he used an Ajax request that called a Flickr API.

Within the phone emulator in Ares, developers can see what the application will look like in both portrait and landscape view. When the application is finished, the developer can package it up, download it to a phone to try it out, share it with friends or submit it to Palm’s application catalog.

Palm is moving cautiously on its application strategy. Developers who got the SDK on its early release in April have been able to put their applications on Palm’s app catalog since October, but there are only about 300 applications on it today, compared with about 12,000 for Android and more than 100,000 for the iPhone. Abbott said Palm wants to make sure all the pieces are in place before its full launch at year’s end, when all developers will be able to submit their apps. For example, the company doesn’t want to launch without all the necessary development tools in place, he said.

Ares will work on a variety of Web browsers, including Firefox and Safari, though Palm has not worked on making it work on Internet Explorer, Abbott said.

Though it’s not as attractive as LimeWire, peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing application Ares offers unrestricted searches and downloads, and it tested completely clean in our informal spyware tests. Ares is open source and available in a number of variations, mostly all are full of spyware, such as Ares Gold, Ares P2P 2.1, and Ares Plus. Ares is the only P2P client we’re aware of that includes online chat. Because it uses its own decentralized Ares network, Ares doesn’t return as many search hits as some of the other clients we tested, but it produces fewer fake files. Download music, movies, software programs, television shows, games and more.

Installing Ares is a simple process. The program first runs, you must click through another couple of configuration dialogs, but all in all, the process is painless and easy. Spybot Search and Destroy found nothing amiss during the Ares installation. Ares is also very easy to uninstall as well.

Navigating the Ares Download interface is easy for anyone who has used Kazaa or LimeWire. Ares follows the same basic format, placing navigation icons along the top for search, view, and the like. It isn’t exactly what we’d call attractive; it’s more on the utilitarian side. Ares also offers unparalleled support 24/7 via email.

Ares has all the usual P2P features, plus some unique ones. There’s a search window, an audio and video preview page, and an upload and download monitor. It’s also quite easy to tweak these controls using the control-panel page. Unfortunately, as with other P2P clients that let you make such adjustments, the average user will need to do a bit of research to understand some of the more arcane settings, such as ports, hash links, and proxy bouncing. Like LimeWire, Ares also serves as a media librarian for your entire computer, not just the files you download or share.

While other P2P clients are limited to 100 or 200 hits, Ares allows unlimited searching on its own network. Alas, with Ares you can perform only one search at a time instead of the multiple simultaneous searches possible within LimeWire. Still, Ares came up with more than 265 unique hits on a generic search for cars — a lot more than you’ll get with any other free client.

While certain file sharing applications may appeal to many a different scope of people, Ares is unique in the sense that it offers such a wide spectrum of diversity in the music/file downloads being share over it’s network. For instance, reggae may appeal to some, while rap might attract others. The very fact that there is no true dominant influence, or “majority” favor throughout the network, this makes an ideal solution for people who like to “mix it up”. Such trends continue to ring true even today. Remember the mix tapes we used to make in the 80’s and 90’s? How about our mix CD’s of the 2000’s? Bottom line is, that this software really shines in terms of what it has to offer to the typical music listener. Not only that, but the software also has it’s own built-in chatserver which enables users to communicate and even browse other users’ file libraries.

You know, there is a reason people continue to use Ares Download to this day; it has survived endless P2P setbacks and calamities, RIAA saga etc. This software is still around 7 years later because YOU want it to be! Look at all the others you gave up on, and they disappeared in the blink of an eye. As we continue to update our software, wring out bugs and head towards a release candidate, we encourage your continued use of our product and really hope that you have, and will continue to enjoy using it; we’re not going anywhere.

An important factor to consider before you can download or share a file from the Ares network, make sure your top status bar reads “online” with the timer running. If you have connection problems, do not hesitate to contact our support team for technical advice.

If your top bar reads “online” but your queries come back with the status “Connecting ” or “Searching”, then read on for helpful tips.

Tip 1. When a file comes back with low availability, search for the term again and make sure you double click on a file with at least two to three stars. The file will be easier to download as there are more sources available.

Tip 2. Results take a few moments to populate, so be patient. Give the network adequate time to locate the files you want.

Tip 3. When you find that a file is taking too long to download, pause it and then resume it. You can do so by right clicking on the Ares Download itself.

Tip 4. If the download is just crawling, then cancel the download, search for the term again and select a different source. The number of members connected and sharing changes from second to second.

Tip 5. Another good suggestions are jumping nodes. Go to your Ares “control panel” and click on the “disconnect” button. After a couple of minutes, click on “connect”. The network will align you to a different node, therefore allowing you a better performance.

Remember, our tech team is always available to answer your questions!

Every so often our support team gets questions and comments about why their computers are operating vigorously at start-up when Ares is running. Don’t panic or even worry about it, it is completely normal and called File Hashing.

When Ares is launched for the first time it hashes all the files in your shared folder(s). The total time it takes will depend on how much you are sharing and the performance of your computer. Note that once this process is completed the software will use almost no resources. (under 1%) of your computers’ processor.

One might wonder if there is any way to halt the hashing process because it slows their PC down too much… Well, you ca always navigate go to the library and pull the priority slider far to the left. The main drawback to doing this is that it will slow the overall hashing process and take much longer to complete. The wiser choice would be to slide the priority bar all the way to the right, which in turn speeds up the file hashing process and decreases the period of time you will hvae to wait for the process to finish.

If you would rather have the program hash when you are away form your computer, you probably don’t want Ares to start when your computer starts; you can stop Ares from executing when your computer starts vy going to the control panel —> general and uncheck the “Load Ares When Windows Starts” checkbox. You’re all set.

If you find yourself unable to connect to the network, you will obviously be unable to search and download files. The Ares Network is comprised of a leaves and supernode proprietary network protocol, which in simple terms, usually makes it very easy for most people to connect throughout an array of different computer setups. There are however, a few hurdles and obstacles that could present a connection threat… Let’s outline the basics now:

1) If you have a first or third party firewall enabled, you’ll need to make sure it is set to allow the software to accept both outgoing and incoming requests.

2)It would be a wise idea to verify that any other security-type software is allowing Ares to operate at full functionality; no limited access.

3) Wireless routers may require you to unblock closed ports via a method called port forwarding. It’s not a very difficult task, but if you need a walkthrough guide, please contact us and we would be happy to assist.

4) If you connect to the Internet via a workplace/university campus, and even after going through the 3 previous steps and you still cannot connect, it’s possible that your network administrator is altogether prohibiting access. At this stage, we suggest that you gain access to the Internet at a different location if you would like to be able to use the software.

If you are a regular user and happen to experience any abnormal connection waiting periods, such as more than 60 seconds, please contact us immediately regarding this issue and we’ll get it resolved!

Once in awhile, we get the question: I don’t want to share my files, what to do?

The question is quite ironic, as this is a sharing network. However, the user does have the option not to share their files. Here’s how:

If you click on the Ares Library tab, you can see your virtual folders of all the files you share. For Example: If you are trying to unshare some song files, click on the “Audio” option. On the screen directly adjacent (next to) it, it will list all your files. All the files should already be marked with a symbol, meaning that the file is shared. Simply right click on the file, and choose the “Share/Unshare” option, to turn sharing off for that particular file.

If you do not want to share ANY of your files: Go to “Library” at the toolbar. Then click on “Preferences” and click on “Manual Configure”.

This will display exactly which directory/folder(s) you are sharing stuff in. If you come across a red box, but it doesn’t have a check in it, click on the plus sign next to the folder. It will open it up and show you what’s in that directory. The whole point is to find the folder with the red box AND checkmark. That means that anything in that folder is being shared. To unshare the entire folder, simply click on the checkmark to remove it. The contents of the folder will no longer be shared.

Get Ares here.

As previously mentioned, an upcoming post would outline some of the major historical properties of Ares, and how it has established itself as the #1 filesharing software of choice, worldwide. Born in mid 2002, it was operated on the Gnutella Network. Later that year, the program broke away to a complicated and proprietary network of its own. Thus, opening the doorway to its independency and ultimate success as a trusted and reliable p2p solution.

As time passed, the software continued to grow and reach staggering heights in popularity; but why did everyone begin using this system, this network of such colossal magnitude? The answer is … because it truly delivered on its word. People finally found a stable platform to use, along with a talented and open-minded development team, and they respected that. As a result, users reciprocated their debt of gratitude by flooding the Network with content as fine as a grain of sand; I’m talking about high fidelity music files, crystal clear movies, rare copies of distributable software and games – and millions of them all inclusive! As you can imagine, this is how it all erupted, and now that it has been independent for 6 1/2 years. The network continues to thrive and grow with millions of new users each year, all (or most) of which are enjoying the stable functionality, clean cut dynamics and super high quality filesharing experience that they have come to love so much!

As most of you know, there are many benefits, as well as dangers, associated with P2P filesharing programs. If you have ever used Limewire, you’re probably familiar with both positive and negative aspects of this venue. As for those of us who aren’t so “into the scoop” or maybe used to be a part of the community in the past, here are some factors to consider when choosing a filesharing application best suited for your needs.

P2P (peer-to-peer) software allows users to connect to each other through a single, or multiple network gateway.

Users can utilize the P2P networks to share digital files amongst one another, such as music, movies, software and games.

Although Limewire, Kazaa and Morpheus used to be the three kings of the filesharing apps, things have changed overtime due to both legal and developmental constraints, two of those three networks as we knew them, burned out years ago. Enough with those failures, if you will.

I am delighted to introduce unto you a hidden jewel, an underdog of the P2P world, called Ares. Categorized as an open source P2P program, it was originally developed in 2002. The decentralized network boasts millions of users spanning the globe. So what exactly is it about this software that makes it stand tall above the competition?

Open Source Project

Millions of active users and counting, to ensure optimal transfer speeds.

Highly customizable interface packed with features for tweaking

Excellent network content, built-in security features, etc.

That was to name a few useful points and why I definitely recommend it. You can download the latest version of Ares by clicking on the banner to the right.
